A message from the President

As I sit down to write my first message to our NACDEP membership as your president, I cannot help but reflect on the fantastic conference we had this past June in Cleveland, Ohio. I want to commend the Ohio State University Community Development professionals for their wonderful hospitality and exceptional mobile learning workshops!
Now, with fall upon us, it is time to turn our attention to preparing for a great year of NACDEP activities. Your NACDEP Executive Board will be meeting this month in Asheville, North Carolina to focus on the following:
- To meet with the North Carolina State University conference planners as they are making plans to host the 2019 NACDEP conference June 9-12. I hope that you have this at the top of your list for professional development in 2019!
- The NACDEP Executive Board will also be spending time talking about how we can increase our efficiency and effectiveness as a board and most importantly, what we can do to insure the long-term sustainability of our organization. One goal is to review our finances and the impacts membership increases/decreases as well as conference attendees. In addition, the Board will review the strategic plan developed in Cleveland last year and determine any additional action items. We will also be using information that was shared by our members during the regional meetings at the 2018 conference in Cleveland.

Extension Leadership Conference
The 2019 Extension Leadership Conference sponsored by JCEP will be held on February 6 - 7, 2019 at the Wyndham Riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas.
The conference Keynote Speaker will be Grace Gorrell who is a former faculty member at the University of Kentucky. Since retiring, she has begun a business "Leading with Grace". Please visit JCEP.org to learn more about the conference and to submit a proposal.
Public Issues Leadership Development Conference
The 2019 Public Issues Leadership Development Conference (PILD) will be held April 14-17, 2019 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia. Please visit JCEP.org to learn more about the conference.
2019 National Urban Extension Conference, May 20-23, 2019 Seattle, WA
The National Urban Extension Conference is the only national gathering of Extension professionals who serve our cities. The 2019 conference, "Innovation in the City: A Land Grant University Experience", will highlight strong urban programming and Extension's opportunity to support the university-level mission of our land-grant universities in our metropolitan regions. With urban focused sessions, mobile tours, networking opportunities, social events, and exhibits the conference aims to both educate and inspire.
Call for Proposals:
Washington State University and the National Urban Extension Leaders are pleased to jointly announce a call for proposals for the National Urban Extension Conference on "Innovation in the City: A Land Grant University Experience," which will be held in Seattle, Washington, May 20-23, 2019.
The 2019 NUEC will focus on four core elements of building successful urban projects and programs: core competencies, subject matter expertise, personal experiences, and innovation.
Proposals may be for presentations, workshops, posters, and panels for the 2019 Conference. Abstracts that highlight research and/or outreach activities that involve partnerships between researchers, practitioners and Extension professionals are especially encouraged. We are also looking for innovative ideas that are just that, ideas.

2018 Un-Conference Reflections

"How might NACDEP members further civil dialogue and diversity efforts?" "What is CD's role in the opioid crisis?" "How can NACDEP help in workforce development?" "Share a happy story about your CD work!"
These were the four topics suggested by audience members at NACDEP's first-ever "Un-Conference" on Tuesday morning. Your feedback on how to innovate and improve our association led the Communications Committee (ComCom) to bring this event to Cleveland.
In general, an unconference creates space and time for participants to discuss topics that they bring. It provides deeper networking, idea generation and exploration, and opportunities to share energy and excitement or form new collaborations. Participants bring the topic; then they "vote with their feet" to engage in one, or all the discussions.
I visited all four groups to listen in and take a few photos. I took a rough count and determined that we had nearly 110 people participating in conversations. That's nearly two-thirds of the entire conference.
Each group gave a quick report of their discussion. Several mentioned sharing contact info to continue the conversation throughout the year. Several folks asked if we would do this again next year in Asheville.
As our NACDEP Board works to expand our value proposition (i.e., the value of the organization to its members), we plan to continue listening to you and experimenting with innovative ideas that will equip and strengthen us for continued good work in our local communities.
Thanks again to everyone who participated. I'm one Board member who will be voting to do another un-conference next year in Asheville.

The Marion County 4-H program (Indianapolis) is challenging youths to step out of their comfort zones by promoting a community initiative known as 4-H Action IDEA (Identity, Development, Engagement, and Advancement). The IDEA is to explore creative ways to bring new opportunities where youth identify needs and interests, in partnership with adults, in targeted community groups, and especially inner-city areas. The aim is to make youth own the values of their communities to raise responsible citizens in the future. 4-H National Headquarters supported the National Institute of Civil Discourse in the development of a text based program titled "Revive Civility." We will introduce the program and share how you can utilize it in your local 4-H programs. We will also discuss what civility and civil discourse are and how they related to 4-H programming. National extension resources will be shared. Interactive discussion will focus on what is going on in your local programs related to civility and civil discourse, what the issues and potential for addressing them are, and what resources you need. Global Youth Citizenship (global citizenship) presented by Jennifer Skuza, Assistant Dean, University of Minnesota Extension
Global youth citizenship emphasizes the importance of thinking because our thinking drives our attitudes, behaviors and actions. The presenters will discuss why global youth citizenship is important, define key terms, and frame global citizenship within the context of 4-H Youth Development. They will also discuss youth perspectives and share innovative methods to teach global citizenship. This workshop is based on a peer-reviewed, nationally distributed curriculum entitled WeConnect: A Global Youth Citizenship Curriculum Second Edition.

English Linguistic Summer Camp 2019 (global citizenship) presented by Alayne Torretta, County 4-H Agent, Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Warren County
This webinar will present current opportunities at the International Summer English Language School in Berdsk, Novosibirsk Oblast, Russia to be held the summer of 2019 for Russian youth 6-17 years of age learning English. The program is in its 13th year and pays all expenses on the ground in country.

Minnesota offers in-person Business Retention + Business Succession course - October 23-25th
The University of Minnesota Extension's online Business Retention & Expansion (BRE) Course offers a community development methodology for business retention. Thanks to NACDEP, we typically have one or a few NACDEP members in our online course enrolled from other states and provinces. Last fall we were happy to have several University of Kentucky and South Dakota State University professionals in the course.
This fall we have a special in-person BRE course Oct 23rd-24th in St. Paul, Minnesota. It is the same course as the online edition except we are adding a new workshop on in the morning of October 25th on Business Succession and Transition for community economic developers. Anyone who signs up for the BRE course will get to attend the Business Succession and Transition workshop for no extra cost (but they do not need to attend on the 25th in order to get course certification). The BRE in-person course is ready to go but the details for the October 25th event are still coming together. Watch this website for further details: z.umn.edu/BusinessRetention.

North Carolina Growing Together
The North Carolina Growing Together project is in the final year of a six year USDA funded grant to bring more locally-grown foods - produce, meat, dairy, and seafood - into mainstream retail and food service supply chains, thus enhancing food security by increasing access to local foods and by strengthening the economics of small to mid-sized farm and fishing operations.
We are holding three Innovations in Economic Development through Local Foods events this Fall to highlight local food projects that exemplify the positive benefits of local food systems. This invitation-only event is targeted to planners, local businesses, tourism professionals, developers, civic leaders and city/county/regional administrators.
Three regional events will highlight local food projects that exemplify the positive benefits of local food systems.
Some of the highlights include:
Expanding the Mariculture Industry- Shellfish aquaculture -- primarily oyster and clam production -- represents a significant economic opportunity for the state of North Carolina.. The session will introduce the partners dedicated to growing the mariculture industry, as well as species grown, economic impacts, growth trends, and barriers to growth.
Introduction to NC 10% campaign. The NC 10% campaign promotes local consumer and institutional purchases. Campaign materials are ready to distribute and larger campaigns can be developed with staff support.
Feature Film, Ugly and Wild, UGLY & WILD explores how Locals Seafood is creating new connections with venerable coastal fishing families to bring one of the state's last wild foods to a dinner plate near you.

We are presenting at The American Planning Association-North Carolina Chapter Meeting on September 12, 2018 Working Landscapes: The Case for Rural Food Systems
Rural communities struggle with land use planning and incentives to support dynamic food and farming businesses. This session explores dynamic land-use planning tools. The film, "What Can Be." examines an economic redevelopment project, the public and private partners involved

I am working with a number of colleagues across the public university system to establish what we are calling the "National Public Issues Education Consortium" so that we can engage in networking, dialogue, information sharing and related coordinated event planning across the public university system for colleagues involved with community engaged scholarships. I have created a website http://www.msucommunitydevelopment.org/publicissueseducation.html and list serve [email protected] to help organize us. We've received input from colleagues and created a draft description, as follows:
The National Public Issues Education Consortium is a faculty-led group dedicated to presenting, sharing, and discussing public issues relevant to community engaged scholarship across disciplines, Extension, and other university outreach activities throughout the United States.
We have also organized a FREE webinar series as an attempt to begin the process of sharing public issues information; I am very happy to organize periodic webinars in the future on various topics as the need and interest arises; logos on the flier are from individuals and organizations that are committed to participating in this effort. Please let me know your thoughts on this effort generally, the website (we can create our own web domain), and ideas you have for moving forward (including inviting others to join). There is no obligation in supporting this effort other than providing feedback, input and collaboration as you see fit. I'm excited to work on what I expect to be a truly grass-roots academic effort to engage us all on various topics related to public issues education. With your help, we can provide leadership to our colleagues on critical contemporary public issues.
As next steps, please share this information with colleagues and let me know if you are interested in joining the list serve.
NIFA NACDEP NEWS
NIFA has a new director. Dr. J. Scott Angle was appointed to a six-year term on August 31, 2018. Among the multiple responsibilities of the position, Dr. Angle will assume leadership for the proposed relocation of the agency. Secretary Perdue announced the relocation of NIFA and its sister agency, the Economic Research Service, on August 9th. A Federal Register notice posted August 17th gave communities thirty days to submit an "Expression of Interest" to be considered as a host site.
NIFA staff have been informed that a site will be vetted and selected by early 2019. Staff will then be given the option to move to the new location, before the end of the 2019 calendar year.
In the interim, the agency is conducting business as usual. This includes solicitation of stakeholder input on the emerging needs and opportunities in food and agricultural sciences.
Through the "NIFA Listens: Investing in Science to Transform Lives" initiative, you are invited to provide feedback on these questions:
- "In your field, what is the most-needed breakthrough in science/technology that would advance your agricultural enterprise?"
- "When considering all of agriculture, what is the greatest challenge that should be addressed through NIFA's research, education, and extension?"
- "What is your top priority in food and agricultural research, extension, or education that NIFA should address?"
Four regional in-person listening sessions will be held:

NIFA Listens website is a one-stop informational hub to RSVP and keep you up-to-date on the sessions. Each session is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. and end no later than 5 p.m. Live webcast will be available for each session, transcribed, and made available for playback. Session attendees must register via NIFA Listens websites. In addition, written comments may be provided electronically through the stakeholder input form on the website or emailed by [email protected] until Friday, Nov. 30. Feedback is welcome through any of our submission methods and will be gathered throughout the initiative.
While change may be afoot, one constant is that research, education, and outreach in community and economic development is vitally important. NACDEP members' input about the direction that research and extension should take is key to helping us (NIFA and partners) ensure that taxpayer dollars are expended wisely while promoting rural prosperity and enhancing quality of life.
Missouri University Extension Offers Innovative Online Program: Leadership Online for Today Beginning January 21, 2019.
University of Missouri Extension has developed an innovative online program with the focus on building better leaders beginning January 21, 2019 and ending April 8, 2019. Registration deadline is Monday, January 7, 2019.
Leadership Online For Today is an interactive program that allows participants to improve communication skills, build relationships and networks, and develop a collaborative project to benefit a community or organization.
Leadership Online For Today includes 11 sessions. Each session will have a specific focus. All sessions will be accessed online.
"Participants have the ability to work at their convenience within the week's timeframe," Johanna Reed Adams Ph.D. MU Extension State Community Development Specialist said. "Leadership coaches and members of the program will use VoiceThread or VoiceThread-Mobile. VoiceThread is a cloud-based, asynchronous media platform that allows for sharing videos, audio recordings, text, photographs or images. Electronic communications will complement the curriculum."
Strengths of the curriculum include convenience and flexibility to help meet the scheduling and learning needs of millennials. Although this class is online, participants will build trust and develop a sense of community with other participants as well as their leadership coach as they interact online.
Experienced leadership coaches guide the learning process by posing questions and helping members make progress toward their goals.
While the program is targeted at the millennial generation, anyone is able to apply for the program. There is a $225 registration fee and, once the program is completed, participants will receive a certificate of completion and 1.1 continuing education units. There is a fee reduction for 3 or more participants from the same organization.
Leadership Online For Today was developed with the intent to prepare emerging leaders to affect positive community change. This innovative online program allows participants to develop leadership skills at their own convenience. The program provides a unique experience for participants that will help prepare them for other leadership opportunities within the community.
